Surgery

Brent Reimer, DVM, DACVS

Diplomate American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS), Brent Reimer, DVM, ACVS joined Iowa Veterinary Specialties in 2007 as the staff surgeon. He achieved Diplomate status with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2003 and is currently Des Moines only board certified surgeon. 

Dr. Reimer attended the University of Iowa where he majored in biology and botany. He received his DVM degree from Iowa State University in 1999 and subsequently performed a one-year small-animal internship at Michigan State University. He next completed a three-year residency in small-animal surgery at the University of California, Davis. Following his residency, he served on the faculty of Iowa State University for approximately three years.

Stanley Wagner, DVM, MS

Dr. WagnerIowa Veterinary Specialties is pleased to announce the newest member of our surgery department, Stanley Wagner, DVM, MS.

Dr. Wagner comes to IVS from Iowa State University where he spent over twenty- two years in the College of Veterinary Medicine. 
Dr. Wagner earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Purdue University and his Master of Science from Kansas State.

Dr. Wagner will begin taking referrals June 1, 2009.

Iowa Veterinary Specialties provides a wide range of surgical services should surgery be necessary, including emergency surgery when needed. Below is a list of surgeries that can be provided.  

Neurosurgery: Surgery for intervertebral disc disease (“ruptured disc” in the back), lumbosacral disorders, spinal fractures, intracranial tumors, and cervical vertebral disorders.

Arthroscopy: This diagnostic procedure is done with an endoscope which has a fiberoptic tip on it to examine the interior of a joint. This is a minimally invasive diagnosis for the treatment of elbow dysplasia, osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions of the hip and knee, etc.



Laparoscopy & Thoracoscopy:
Minimally invasive approach for surgical exploration, treatment and obtainment of diagnostic biopsies for a myriad of diseases including liver diseases, pericardial diseases, and kidney diseases using an endoscope.



Surgical Oncology: Surgical diagnosis and treatment of neoplastic (“cancerous”) diseases.

Reconstructive Surgery: Cosmetic and functional restoration following traumatic or surgical events necessitating skin flap, skin graft or muscular graft transposition.

TPLO: (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) commonly used to correct cranial cruciate ligament disease or rupture. This is a state-of-the-art surgical procedure that allows the most near-normal biomechanical return to function with the least amount of ongoing degenerative joint changes. Dr. Reimer has vast skill and success in performing over 200 TPLO procedures.
