Diagnostic Tools

Digitial X-Ray
X-rays are often a very important diagnostic tool in the diagnosis of your pet. In order to achieve the best possible image, we have invested in state of the art x- ray equipment and fully trained our technicians in producing the best image possible. Also, through our digital X-ray system, your referring veterinarians are able to access our images at any time via the internet, which will help ensure a smooth transition back to your referring veterinarian.

Computed Tomography (CT)

New at IVS is Computed Tomography (CT). Computed Tomography is a valuable diagnostic tool used for advanced imaging. Just as in humans, CT allows us to diagnose conditions that may not have been diagnosable through x-ray.

Types of cases that may benefit from a CT exam include:
     Nasal discharge
     Unexplained pleural effusion
     Evaluation of soft tissue masses
Evaluation for metastasis (abdominal or thoracic)
     Intervertebral disc disease
     Elbow lameness
Ear diseases such as nasopharyngeal polyps or end-stage
otitis externa for assessment of candidacy for total ear canal
     ablation.

Laboratory
In order to accurately diagnose your pet's condition, laboratory tests may be necessary. At Iowa Veterinary Specialties, we have a full- service in- house laboratory that gives us the ability to run a number of invaluable tests including blood chemistries, complete blood counts (CBC) with differentiation, clotting factor evaluations, electrolytes, blood typing, cross-matching, complete urinalyses and many other tests.

By performing these tests in-house, we are able to begin necessary treatment immediately, saving valuable time for your pet. When neccessary, we do utilize outside laboratory testing.

Pharmacy
Most of the prescriptions that are needed for the care of your pet can be obtained at IVS. We fill the vast majority of your prescriptions when you leave the hospital, saving you a trip to the drug store. If your pet needs medication after release from the hospital, your regular veterinarian will refill the prescription as appropriate.
